Overwhelmed much?
Over the past few weeks I’ve received a number of emails and phone calls from newcomer internet marketers who are struggling to lay a solid foundation in their internet marketing success journey.
The common thread between these folks is a sense of “feeling overwhelmed.”
Let’s be candid…
I’ve invested considerable time and dollars into learning the things that have brought me success. You might find this surprising, but:
The truth is that a small handful of basics, when applied, will produce internet marketing success that is “bankable.”
My Top 5 Internet Marketing Success Tips:
#1 – Build a blog and make it your home
In order to have a serious business, you need a place from which to operate. A blog is the perfect place to communicate with your target audience and showcase your offerings. Think of your website as the central nervous system of your business development efforts. In this place you will be able to control the flow of communication to others and demonstrate your value.
Some like to build a “Cult of Personality” type of presence, others prefer to be Information Machines. – How you do it is up to you because you are in control.
I recommend the self-hosted WordPress platform for the build of your site. If you want to learn to DIY
(do-it-yourself), that is certainly fine. There are some great places to learn to do this, such as
MLSP. Alternatively, you could
hire someone to build the site for you.
Proper use of a website will separate you from people who are merely schlepping the next passing thrill. It’ll also brand you as a trusted authority.
There’s an audience for everyone, but it’s up to us to put ourselves out there!
#2 – Research traffic generation and master 2 online methods
There are many methods one may employ to achieve traffic to their web offerings.
Facebook,
Twitter, SEO, and PPC are a few.
Choose 2 methods, learn them thoroughly, and employ them immediately. Action begets results – it’s not sexy, but it’s gospel-truth.
You may find that one of your 2 is the real breadwinner as this is often the case. Most “Guru” marketers have made millions from one strategy alone. Some will prefer to laser-focus on just one strategy and that’s fine. – But most of the non-Gurus I’ve interviewed agree that beginning with 2 provides a frame of reference. This offers a way to gauge your likes, dislikes, and your true strengths.
#3 – Emulate great copyrighters and learn the discipline of effective direct-response marketing

Bait the hook
No one bites an un-baited hook.
Great copy is what drives people through the proverbial doors.Good copyrighting skills will never go out of style.
You want people to see what you are offering, so you need to master the art of driving them through your doors.
You want to emulate some of the best in the trade. Look into some of “The Greats” such as: Gary Bencivenga, Gary Halbert, and Frank Kern. These are people who have become legends due to efficacy of their copyrighting skills.
#4 – Learn to build an effective marketing funnel and then put it to work
So you have your home on the web, the skills to get people to the door, the know-how to make them want to walk in and look around…
You want to be able to monetize it, right?
That’s precisely why you need to employ a marketing funnel system.
There are excellent courses (with active membership communities) which literally
walk you through the nuances of building an effective funnel. My 2 faves are
MLSP and
Empower Network.
#5 – Treat this like a REAL business
All things “web” are in a constant state of motion. Nothing stagnates here. Be consistent and adopt a thirst for ongoing learning. Know this, connect to it, and adapt your behaviours so you’re constantly growing and elevating.
Be serious, recognizing that it’s the journey here which is the destination. Commit to the process, grow yourself, take consistent action and you will not fail.
These internet marketing success tips are tried and true. – They prove that it doesn’t have to be overwhelming to succeed in the online world. Chunk the info down into actionable items and work your way down the list.
The basics are “the basics” for a reason, they work. If you stick to them and commit to your journey, you’ll save time, spare yourself a few grey or lost hairs, and you’ll have fun!
Stay tuned for the next installment in this internet marketing success series!

Hey Cat, Carol Lynn from Ken’s group! It was a pleasure reading your article. Great tips and also very practical. A lot of “tips” that you read are very ethereal and they sound good but you’re not really sure what to do with them IRL.
Your tips sounded good AND they are things someone can use right now. Plus it sounds like you’re talking from experience which is a lot more valuable than something vaguely helpful.
I agree with Chuck on #2 – it’s so important to master something instead of trying to do everything and please everyone. It’s something I really try to do every day and it helps to have that reminder.
Thanks for sharing!

Hi Carol Lynn,
Great to see you here at my little abode on the web. I was looking forward to engaging with you, so thanks for checking out my article!
I’m glad to hear your feedback on my tips! I have also noticed that a lot of “tips” I get in places are a bit in the yonder to provide any immediately actionable steps to be employed in a sensible manner.
My plan is to delve a bit deeper into these tips over the course of the next several installments which will be framed around this same subject matter. I’ve found there are simple ways to help initiate one into the internet marketing arena as starting points – and I’d like to be a sherpa of sorts to help in that process.
Point #2 is definitely a big one. We really have to rise to the challenge to do justice for ourselves. Focusing on what we can reach immediately is good because it gives us more room (and “headspace”) to be ACTIONABLE. Action-taking will get us there even if we bumble along for a little while in the beginning. It’s not a perfect science by any stretch of the imagination.
I’d love to know more about how you work to master tasks. If you have any tips on that subject matter, please share!
Thanks!!
Cat
I agree that a lot of tips you get “out there” are really just words words words and not a whole lot to do.
As for mastering tasks… hm, sounds like a blog post. Or maybe a book! The important thing is to be consistent with practice and also to challenge yourself. For example, when I’m learning something new, if I try it out today then leave it alone for another week, I already forgot what I know. So it’s important to make something a priority if you’re learning it. Also, once you learn something it’s easy to get all excited about it, feel like you accomplished something and then stop there (feels pretty good to know something, right??) But it’s important to keep going, find something to add onto your knowledge and learn again.
It can also be very helpful to teach other people. I find that when I’m learning something new, if I can share what I know with someone, it’s not only exciting but also helpful to both of us. Of course, sometimes I can’t find someone who wants to learn, so I grab my husband and torment him for a while as he nods along
Another simple thing I do, is write down specific steps in a process that I’m learning. So that’s sort of my blueprint. Then I follow the steps until I can do something from rote, and until I no longer have to look at my cheat sheet. Then once I have the process nailed down, I work on really understanding it.
Here is a simple example: lets say I am going to cook dinner. I will write down all the ingredients and steps in the recipe and follow them along precisely. Then next time I make the same dinner, I practice those steps and getting all the ingredients right until one day I can throw everything in the pot from memory. THEN I start exploring things like why it tastes better with salt and how the temperature of the pot affects the end result and what happens if I add carrots…
I know that is backwards for some people (take my husband…) he starts with the “big picture” and understanding how things work before he worries about the little steps. But for me I find it is easier to learn the small steps, get them down, then expand.
Kind of like when you were in third grade and you had to memorize the multiplication tables
At that point who the heck understood how math worked?? But you knew that 9×4=36 and eventually you realized OOOOOOh, is THAT what’s happening!
So this was a lot longer than I planned but I hope it added something helpful!

Hey Carol Lynn,
I want to first say “Thank You” to you for rocking out my comment section. These are great! I appreciate the wisdom you’ve taken the time to share here.
So enjoyable to read your thoughts and exchange with you, so my sincerest gratitude to ya!
I agree about there being a lot of kind of goofy material out there being circulated in the form of “tips.” I find these all over the place and usually consider this stuff junk-info. I know it’s crude, but you can just tell when something wasn’t written with the intent of being a true tip, but rather being some quick content that someone wanted to throw up onto a site, most likely for ranking purposes. Non sequitur garbaggio, in my opinion!
I love what you said about mastering tasks. It reminds me of what the amazing Bruce Lee once said, “I fear not the man who has practiced 10000 kicks once, but I fear the man who has practiced one kick 10000 times.”
Your way of growing sounds a lot like what our mutual friend, Ken Pickard, teaches and speaks of on his blog. I was just reading one of his posts where he talks about the “information suck zone” where you just start taking action and then filling in the “blanks” as you go. The idea is that you’ll learn just what you need to get you onto the next part of your plan. I think that there are different learning styles that have specific preferences, but in the quick-paced world that you and I are living in, it seems that going the “information suck zone” way is more conducive to thriving in this environment. Your example of learning multiplication tables is a fine example!
Again, thanks for rocking this out, Carol Lynn. I think you definitely added some insight and value to the thread and am happy that you did!

Hi Jussi,
So nice to meet you today! Thanks for popping in to let me know what you thought!
#1 is really the most important, I agree with you! Without #1 we are popping around in different directions with no way to make it all “cohesive.” Social media can be our best friends these days, especially if we have a central hub where we are working from!
I’m glad you got yourself some warm fuzzies.
Please come visit again soon!
Best regards,

Great tips Cat, but I don’t expect anything less from you.
I agree, all of this took a whole heck of a lot of trail and error on my part as well. Oh yeah, plus time and lots and lots of money. You just laid that out so easily for your readers to digest and then of course if they don’t understand anything that you’ve shared, they can leave their questions in their comment or send you an email for more advice.
That’s how to get things done without wasting a lot of time like so many people do finding themselves in information overload. That is so not fun at all.
I also have to admit that #1 is my favorite, make your blog your home. I know you know why that one sits so well with me. It’s the best place to connect with others and start building those relationships.
Thanks for this great list Cat and I sure hope you’ve enjoyed your weekend. Let’s make this a great week shall we!

Thanks also for the well-weekend wishes! I have had a RESTful weekend for myself. I have needed it! I’ve been undergoing some herbal therapy to cleanse my body for the onset of the new season. I want to be vibrant and beaming come Spring!
Boy can I agree with you on having done a lot of trial and error as well as spendthrift-ness to get myself going. Much of what I’m writing is a retrospective on my own journey, thus far, in an attempt to help others “get there” quicker and more effectively!
These tips are just the starting points from which to delve deeply. I’ve been planning out a whole series of follow-ups that go into more detail. I sort of envision this article to be a wheel that will roll when it’s properly supported. The follow-ups (and follow-through by the reader/doer) will be the spokes that support the wheel so we have something functional.
I agree that Point #1 is the place where this all must begin! – You’re a great example of how to dress up one’s web home to make it inviting for all!
Cheers to a great week ahead!!

Cat,
I think your best tip is “treat it like a real business.” So many people come into our industry and want to get rich quick without doing any work. I’ve found that part-time work equals a part-time income and full-time work equals a full-time income. Your other points about setting up a blog and creating a marketing funnel are spot on, too. I hope you’re getting the best for you too, Chuck!

Each tip could be applied to any online venture. I also enjoyed how you laced this post with your awesome personality as well.

Hi Cat,
Great advice you have here.
Having your blog as your home or front store (as I call it) for whatever business you are trying to run online and even offline is a MUST.
Today, I was just talking to an architect who said that work is kinda thin in his area right now, and that is what I told him, you need to have a blog to promote your business. If I had known this truth when I first started my network marketing business back in 2006 my blog would have thousands of followers today. But, hey, it’s never too late.
Thanks for this great post, Cat and have a great day!

Your blog is really important because it “pre-sells” you to your prospect. A quick look at your blog will tell people you’re a serious marketer. An indepth reading of your blog will create appreciative fans who are potential buyers.
I also agree with your tip on limiting the number of marketing methods to learn. There are SO many out there. I encourage my team to consider their strengths and what they enjoy doing and pick a method that resonates with them.
After all, if they are going to master it, they should love what they’re doing. Or else why do it?
Thanks, Cat… love the post!

Simply right on! After 6 months of failing forward I saw the light…and that’s point # 2. Pick 2 reach out methods and master them! To me this means working on the learning curve until you can teach it and build leads from it. When you have “mastered” the marketing method you can either outsource it and or just pick up another marketing method.
You point #1 goes without saying as well…except for new bloggers who have not gotten this yet. Your blog is your home. Make it inviting, cozy and inviting to your guests.

Hey Sam,
Great to see you smiling and sharing your thoughts on the topic!
I think you’re right about how learning to effectively “get traffic” can be a stumper. I was pretty mystified by this subject til I learned how to understand a bit more about how the search engines “think.” Once the concepts are understood, it’s so much easier to pick a direction to run with.
I think you are describing my first attempt at internet marketing when you said “everything is just one confusing blob of information!” lol The best shortcut I ever found was another blogger I admired who I could emulate. I kinda latched onto how she operated and adapted some of her behaviours to myself. There are so many awesome guides all ready out there doing what we want to do as marketers, especially as newbies. Emulating success is a great way to learn as you grow!
I think your blog is awesome. I love the way you share your perspectives about life and your journey. I have a great feeling that copyrighting will fit you like a comfy old pair of jeans and that you’ll find a cathartic and creative outlet in it. I could see you really rocking that out with a nice dose of integrity and style. With your writing talents and consistency of efforts you could, no doubt, be a formidable marketer.
Thanks for sharing, Sam. I really appreciate your participation. Let me know if I can ever help with anything!

I agree with all of this and just wished that I had not been so blind to the fact that MLSP is such a fantastic tool. I spent thousands of dollars/pounds (!) on my marketing education and rather stubbornly believed that because of that, I did not need a generic out of the box marketing system. I didn’t understand why so many of the leading marketers were using it until the penny dropped and I had a big “aha” moment at the first No Excuses Summit about 18 months ago when I realised that it is quite literally plug and play, start generating an income and then learn it all! Awesome!
MLSP is a great tool but in my experience it works well when you have a sponsor and leader who is able to walk complete newbies through the process to avoid overwhelm – and that person would definitely be you Cat!

Hi Nicky,
Great to hear your thoughts on this matter!
I know you’re not alone in your experience. I am one who flailed around a bit before I really found a groove for myself, too. It was expensive, but the good news is that new folks who find what we’re sharing can learn from our mistakes rather than having to make the same costly ones for themselves!
That’s so awesome that you had your epiphany at a the No Excuses Summit. I’m not surprised that you got your “A ha!” moment at a live event. Those things can be very powerful!
I agree with what you said about MLSP. I completely flunked MLSP the 1st go round because I joined the wrong person. I joined someone who was not willing or ABLE to help himself, let alone another person. It always matters who you join with, that’s for sure!
And thank you so much for your sweet compliment about how I work and why newbies could do well with me. It really means a lot to me to have your endorsement, Nicky!
I think the same thing you said about me is also true for you! Any newcomer would be blessed to have a mentor like you in their life.
Keep on slugging at it, my friend! While you’re perfecting your “swing” there are tons of people watching, vicariously living through you. I know that as we both continue in this way, more will come forward ready to show the world what they have got! And I, for one, know that they will certainly be enriched by the experience!
Have an excellent weekend!!

I really enjoyed tip #2 because truer words cannot be spoken! I don’t know how many people I’ve talked to who were interested in starting something online to make money, only to be swamped down with trying to learn everything..and not only that, but learn it to perfection! You really will not get anywhere unless you take a leap of faith, or that first step and start testing!

Hi Dave,
So nice to receive your message and to meet you. Thank you for taking the time to read and share your thoughts here, I appreciate that!
I’m also glad you enjoyed these points (especially #2).
Internet marketing is a huge subject and can be quite an undertaking to learn from scratch. I think we need to be very honest with ourselves about this. I’m not sure where it came from, but there appear to be many a misnomer about this form of marketing. I’m always a bit shocked at the lack of understanding around it and the constant pursuit of the illusive white buffalo of a “push button” solution that “does it all.”
We all must start somewhere. Once a long long time ago, I took my first steps. I’m sure I fell a number of times, as we all do when we begin. – But, as you said, it requires that leap of faith (or even just a small step of faith) before we can get our feet under us.
Thanks so much for sharing your insightful comment and please do visit again soon!
Best regards,
Cat Alexandra
Cat – I agree completely! Small steps at first…noone will ever have ALL of their ducks lined up before starting. If that was the case, nothing would get off the ground! I too have failed on a few occassions, but I’ve learned from my mistakes and know what Not to do the next time. Helping others and being genuine is indeed the key that most people for some reason fail to understand

Hey there Dave,
Great to hear from you amigo!
I think you made a great point about how we all get started! This is really helpful insight for newcomers who are coming onto the scene. We do well to align our expectations with reality so that we can feel good about what we’re doing and have the stamina to get through the steps.
Great comment, Dave! Hope you’re doing great! Let me know if I can help with anything!

You’re most welcome, Harleena! You deserve them!
I know what you mean about Adrienne’s influence. I have learned so much by just being a little fly on her wall. lol
I think that building up a community to connect with is one of those things that so many people want but don’t necessarily know how to attract and maintain. I think you’re doing a fine job of that from what I can see! It goes to show that your passion of building relationships with people is working so nicely for you!
I hope that you’re having a fantastic week! I have been having a lovely one…waking up to the sound of birds singing is one of my favourite things. It means that Spring is here. Spring keeps a huge smile on my face!!
